Bad Garmin Sleep Score. Should I still train today?
Usually yes, adjusted. After a Fair night, train but take the top off. After a Poor night (below 60), keep easy aerobic work and move intervals or heavy lifting out 2–3 days.
What Garmin’s Sleep Score measures
Garmin’s sleep score, powered by Firstbeat Analytics, rates last night from 0 to 100 on how long and how well you slept. Your watch uses heart rate, HRV and movement to find when you fell asleep and woke, time awake, and time in light, deep and REM sleep.
Quality covers the stages and the patterns between them, awake time, restlessness and your average stress score during sleep, which comes from HRV. Your age and baseline readings add context.
The score is an input to Training Readiness, alongside your last three nights. High scores are rare: Garmin reported only 5% of users averaged Excellent in late 2022, and the 2024 average was 71, which is Fair.
Garmin’s ranges, and what to do after each night
| Score | Level | What to do today |
|---|---|---|
| 90–100 | Excellent | Train as planned. If a hard session is on the plan, do it properly. |
| 80–89 | Good | Train as planned. |
| 60–79 | Fair | Where most nights land. Hours near normal: train as planned. A short night: train trimmed, intensity down a notch, last hard rep left in the tank. |
| Below 60 | Poor | Switch to easy aerobic or technique work and move the hard day out 2–3 days. Under five hours, or a third poor night running, recover deliberately. |
Educational, not medical advice. With chest pain, a fever or feeling unwell, rest and see a doctor.
What the score can’t see
Sleep score is one night. Use it to size today, not judge the week. One poor night against a solid run is a paper cut; the third in a row is different. A review of sleep loss in athletes found some maximal efforts can hold up after a short night, while sport-specific performance and reaction time tend to suffer.
Sleep stages from the wrist are estimates. The score doesn’t know about Saturday’s race or a calf that’s been tight since Tuesday, and a specific pain overrules a good score. A night can score Fair on restlessness when the hours were fine, so read the hours too.
px reads your Sleep Score every morning alongside your sleep, HRV, resting heart rate and calendar, and sizes the day from all of it, telling you why. It doesn’t change your Garmin.

Questions
What is a good Garmin Sleep Score?
Garmin rates 80–89 Good and 90–100 Excellent. The 2024 average was 71, so your own usual range is the better benchmark.
Should I work out after a poor sleep score?
Usually yes, but easier. Easy aerobic work, technique and mobility suit a poor night; intervals and maximal lifts suit a better one.
Why is my sleep score low when I slept eight hours?
The score weighs quality as well as length: time awake, restlessness, the balance of stages and stress during sleep. Alcohol or a stressful evening can pull it down after a long night.
Does a low sleep score affect Training Readiness and Body Battery?
Yes. Last night’s sleep score is a Training Readiness factor, and Garmin notes that a low sleep score leads to a low Body Battery the next day.
